Son repeating himself

Subject: Son repeating himself

Hi Claire Thank you for the opportunity to write to you. I always enjoy reading your forum. My son is 4 years old and is a wonderful normal boy. Very happy at creche and is always getting a good report card. He loves doing puzzles, loves number games, painting, drawing and playing with his friends. He is our only child and a very loving and gentle child. My concern is that he would sometimes say a sentence and then repeat the last part of the sentence in a whisper to himself. He doesn't do it all the time. But a couple of times during the day. Other than this he is a wonderful and intelligent child. Will he outgrow it or should I worry about it. Thank you in advance

Dear Mother of P Thank you for posting and I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I understand your concern for your son. From what you have described your son is intelligent and possibly even gifted. Repeating himself could be self checking to make sure he has said it correctly. Apparently Einstein used to do this as well.Look for other signs of perfectionism so you can help him not to be too hard on himself. Always acknowledge what he says by answering him or by reinforcing what he said. Avoid correcting hom too often when he speaks or criticising the way he speaks. It would also be beneficial to discuss your concerns with your paediatrician. Keep me posted and let me know how you all are doing.
