Children & money

Interesting article on money for a grade 1. I had never heard the term tuck shop, as a Canadian. I remember teaching my children the value of money, although they were around the ages of 9 & 11 when I started. My daughter was a miser and my son a spender and despite good intentions and teaching them the same values, they are still the same today. She save, he spends. Teaching them to save for what they really wanted was a challenge but a good lesson. He always wanted name brand and would have to save for a long time to get what he desired, whereas she didn't care so much about the label. She would have 2 pairs of shoes to his one, but then his shoes lasted longer. It is all a lesson, isn't it?

Hi Wendy Yes. Here in SA a tuckshop would be a cafeteria with the difference being the food is bought and then eaten in the playground. The key as you said is teaching children about values, and teaching them to think critically and make healthy choices empowers them in all areas. Regards Claire
