Fine Motor Skills

Hi Claire, I would like some advice, my son aged 5.5 is in Grade O this year at a very good sought after public school. His teacher is however concerned that his fine motor skills are quite weak and may soon recommend OT therapy once schools reopens if he does not improve. In the meantime, we do the recommended exercises (drawing, colouring & joining dots) every day with him from the teacher, however we as parents are concerned e.g at his age, when asked to draw a stick person, he initially was unable to though he's somewhat improved. What is your opinion on fine motor skills in as far as he's age is concerned?

Dear Elizabeth

Thank you for posting. I understand your concern for your son. It is common for boys not to enjoy fine motor activities and this is when a good occupational therapist who has good rapport with children can help build their confidence and give them useful tips to help make fine motor activities more fun. In addition the OT will also be able to help strengthen the muscles required for gross motor activities.

Considering that your son will be going into Grade 1 next year and will be required to write, there is no harm in having him assessed by an occupational therapist and then make your decision based on her report. Ask around and find an OT who has a good reputation with children.

 Best wishes

Claire
