Concentration & Neurological assessment
Question

Dear Claire

I’ve just come from a teacher/ parent meeting which has triggered some concerns and confusion. I’m blessed with a 7-year-old, boy, who attends a private school.  He’s been there since last year, Grade 1. Initially, he had some difficulty with his school work, but he is constantly improving, to the extent that he is now ahead of his class in reading and numeracy.

His teacher's concern is that he still has some problems concentrating and retaining information. The times that he does concentrate, he excels. She has asked us to have a neurological assessment done. She was very vague as to the frequency of these episodes.

I know my son better that anyone else, and in my gut I know that there isn’t a problem. When he is tired or bored, or lacks inspiration or motivation, he will not pay attention to anything...I think we both have that in common. I do not want him to go on medication. Do you know of a good child neurologist and can you advise?

Many thanks

Question

Thank you for your email. I understand how confused and concerned you are feeling.

There is a strong possibility that your son may be bored in class as he is ahead in numeracy and literacy and it would be very sad if a bright child was put on medication because his teacher is unable to maintain his interest or provide the enrichment he needs.

I would recommend you have a full assessment including an IQ test done with a qualified educational psychologist. She/he will give you a comprehensive report indicating your son's strengths and weaknesses and recommend any therapies including whether they think he needs a neurological assessment.

If you tell me which area you live in I can give you the names of educational psychologists in your area.

You understand your son well, trust your instincts and research all recommendations that are made thoroughly before considering medication. Medication  can help children with severe learning and behaviour problems, but in your case it should be a last resort.

Let me know the results of the assessment and I can advise you further.
